The CAKE Framework: A Simple Way to Explain Good SEO
SEO is not only about understanding bots. It is about helping bots understand us—and the clarity, authority, knowledge, and experience behind our information.
I have always thought that SEO can be explained using CAKE:
- Clarity
- Authority
- Knowledge demonstrated
- Experience
CAKE is not a ranking formula. It is not a replacement for technical SEO, content strategy, links, or any of the other disciplines involved in search. It is a simple way to explain the question underneath all of them: what makes a piece of information worth understanding and trusting?
We often describe SEO as the work of understanding search engine bots. That is only one side of the relationship. I think it is more useful to turn the idea around:
SEO is not only about us understanding bots. It is about bots trying to understand us.
A search system encounters pages, links, entities, authors, organisations, claims, and many other signals. It has to form a view of what the information means, who it comes from, whether it is useful, and where it belongs in relation to everything else it knows.
CAKE is my way of making that challenge easier to discuss.
C is for Clarity
Before information can be judged, it has to be understood.
Clarity starts with the obvious questions:
- What is this page about?
- Who is it for?
- What question does it answer?
- Who produced it?
- Which person, product, organisation, place, or topic does it describe?
- How does it relate to the rest of the website?
These questions sound basic, but many SEO problems begin with unclear answers.
A page may try to cover too many intentions. The title may promise something different from the main content. Important context may be assumed rather than stated. Several pages may describe the same subject in conflicting ways. A person or organisation may use different names across different parts of the web.
Technical signals contribute to clarity too. Page titles, headings, internal links, canonical URLs, structured data, navigation, and information architecture all help describe what a page is and how it fits into a larger system.
But clarity is not created by adding more labels. A page with excessive optimisation can still be confusing. The purpose is to reduce ambiguity, not to repeat the same phrase as often as possible.
If a reader cannot quickly understand the subject and purpose of a page, we should not expect a machine to resolve that uncertainty for us.
A is for Authority
Once the information is clear, the next question is why it deserves attention.
Authority is often reduced to links or the overall strength of a domain. Those signals can matter, but the broader idea is about recognition and trust.
Who stands behind the information? Does that person or organisation have a credible relationship with the subject? Is the information consistent with what other reliable sources say? Do other people refer to it, use it, or build on it?
Authority is relational. It is not something a page declares about itself.
A company can state that it is a leader. An author can describe themselves as an expert. Those claims become meaningful only when there is evidence around them: a clear identity, a body of work, accurate references, independent recognition, and consistent information over time.
This is why entity clarity, authorship, citations, relevant links, and a coherent public presence matter. They help a search system connect a claim with the wider context needed to evaluate it.
Authority also depends on scope. Being a reliable source for one subject does not automatically make someone a reliable source for every subject. Good SEO makes that relationship specific rather than assuming authority transfers everywhere.
K is for Knowledge demonstrated
It is easy to say that we know something. The harder and more useful task is to demonstrate that knowledge in the content itself.
Knowledge is demonstrated through useful detail. It appears in the distinctions we make, the questions we anticipate, the evidence we provide, and the way we explain trade-offs.
A page that demonstrates knowledge does more than repeat a definition. It helps the reader understand the subject well enough to make a decision, complete a task, or see the problem more clearly.
That may involve:
- explaining why something happens, not only what happens;
- distinguishing similar concepts that are often confused;
- addressing limitations and exceptions;
- showing how different parts of a system affect one another;
- using evidence that supports the specific claim being made;
- answering the natural follow-up questions a reader will have.
The word demonstrated is important. Search visibility should not depend on asking a machine to accept our expertise at face value. The page should contain enough substance for the quality of the thinking to be visible.
Knowledge can also be demonstrated through first-hand observations, original examples, practical methods, lessons from implementation, and evidence created by doing the work. These details show that the source can connect an idea with reality rather than simply repeat what has already been said elsewhere.
That material should be represented honestly. A generic example should not be presented as personal experience. If a point comes from research, it should be described and referenced as research. If it comes from direct involvement, the context and limits should be clear. Both can demonstrate knowledge when the source is transparent about where the information came from.
Real work also contains friction: dependencies, exceptions, imperfect data, organisational constraints, and consequences. Showing those realities demonstrates deeper knowledge than presenting a framework as if it always operates in ideal conditions.
This does not mean every page needs to be long. Length is not the same as knowledge. A short answer can demonstrate deep understanding if it is precise, complete for its purpose, and free from unnecessary material.
E is for Experience
Experience is what happens while someone engages with and consumes the information.
When a person reaches a page, can they access it, orient themselves, follow the explanation, and use what they find? Or does the page make good information unnecessarily difficult to consume?
The experience can be shaped by:
- how quickly and reliably the content becomes available;
- whether it works well on the reader's device;
- readability, accessibility, and visual hierarchy;
- whether headings, navigation, and links help the reader move through it;
- whether advertising, pop-ups, or interface elements interrupt the task;
- whether the format suits the information being communicated;
- how much effort it takes to reach and understand the answer;
- whether the reader can complete the task that brought them there.
This is more than making a page look attractive. A polished page can still create a poor experience if it hides the answer, overwhelms the reader, performs badly, or makes simple information difficult to follow.
The delivery of information is part of its quality. Valuable knowledge that cannot be comfortably accessed, understood, or used is less helpful than it could be.
CAKE works as a whole
The four parts reinforce one another.
Clear information with no authority may be easy to understand but difficult to trust. Authority without demonstrated knowledge can become reputation without substance. Strong knowledge delivered through a poor experience may be valuable but unnecessarily difficult to consume. A smooth experience without clarity or knowledge may feel easy while saying very little.
Good information brings the four together:
- Clarity makes the subject understandable.
- Authority provides context for why the source is credible.
- Knowledge demonstrated gives the answer substance and shows the thinking behind it.
- Experience makes the information accessible, engaging, and usable.
This is why I find CAKE useful for explaining SEO beyond individual tactics. A canonical tag can clarify which URL represents a page. An author profile can clarify who produced an article. Internal links can explain relationships. References can support authority. Detailed analysis and first-hand evidence can demonstrate knowledge. A fast, readable, accessible page with helpful navigation can create a better experience.
The implementation changes, but the underlying questions remain connected.
What counts as good information changes over time
There is one more part of the framework that matters: none of these qualities is permanently settled.
How we determine what is good information can change with time.
The facts themselves may change. New evidence may challenge an accepted view. Language and user expectations may evolve. A source that was current several years ago may no longer reflect the present situation. Search systems may also develop new ways of interpreting content, identity, reputation, and usefulness.
That means good information needs maintenance.
Clarity can weaken when a website changes around an old page. Authority can shift when the people or organisations involved change. Knowledge can become incomplete as a field develops. Experience can deteriorate as devices, interfaces, formats, accessibility expectations, and reading behaviours change.
An article is not good merely because it was good on the day it was published. Its value depends on whether its claims, context, and conclusions continue to help someone now.
This is why published and updated dates matter. It is why content ownership matters. It is why correcting, consolidating, or retiring information is as much a part of SEO as creating new pages.
A practical CAKE review
When reviewing a page, I can reduce a complicated discussion to four groups of questions.
Clarity
- Is the subject and purpose immediately understandable?
- Are the important entities and relationships named consistently?
- Does the structure help readers and machines interpret the page?
Authority
- Is it clear who stands behind the information?
- Does the source have a credible relationship with the subject?
- Are important claims supported by appropriate evidence or references?
Knowledge demonstrated
- Does the content answer the question with useful depth?
- Does it explain distinctions, reasoning, and limitations?
- Is the detail relevant rather than added simply to make the page longer?
Experience
- Is the information easy to access, navigate, read, and consume?
- Does the page work well across devices and different access needs?
- Can the reader understand and use the information without unnecessary friction?
Then I ask a final question across all four: is this still true and useful today?
That is CAKE. It is a simple framework, but it captures what I believe much of SEO is trying to achieve. We are helping systems understand our information well enough to recognise when it is clear, credible, knowledgeable, and good to consume.
The better we become at communicating those qualities, the less SEO feels like trying to decode a bot—and the more it becomes the work of making genuinely good information easier to understand.
